Brownell has introduced a range of transformer breathers to prevent the deterioration of oil cooling medium insulation.
Air space above the oil in a conservator tank expands and contracts due to transformer temperature variations and climatic effects. Air drawn into the tank will contain moisture which causes the oil to thicken and will increase corrosion and cause deterioration of the oil cooling medium.
An important characteristic for the transformer oil is its high dielectric ability. The water content of the oil will affect its dielectric value. If the oil is dry it will have a high dielectric value. Contamination with water will decrease this value thereby increasing the oils electrical conduction.
The Brownell range of breathers provides an effective and economical means of removing the moisture from air entering the transformer. A self indicating drying agent allows a continuous assessment of its condition, changing colour from orange to green when saturated.
Brownell's breathers range in size from 1000 to 25,000 litres. They have integral maintenance free valves eliminating conventional liquid oil seals. When saturated the breathers can be simply reactivated from repeated use.
